TUNED
MASS
DAMPER
A complete front axle vibration damping ecosystem for road and gravel bikes.
combining RS Development hardware with 3phos powered configuration software.
Developed by RS Development, the TMD system targets high frequency vibrations at the front axle without adding suspension travel or changing the steering geometry.
Combined with a dedicated configuration tool developed with 3phos, the system can be tuned according to bike type, rider profile, terrain and use case.
THE PROBLEM IS VIBRATION
Rough asphalt, cobblestones and gravel generate high frequency vibrations that travel through the front wheel, fork, handlebar and rider’s upper body. Traditional comfort solutions often add travel, weight or complexity.
The TMD system takes another route. It does not suspend the front end. It reduces selected vibration frequencies directly at the source, helping the bike remain precise while improving comfort and control.
HARDWARE
Two units work symmetrically, one on each fork leg. Inside each unit, a moving mass slides on a precision guide rod between springs and low friction bearings. When the front structure vibrates within the target frequency range, the internal mass moves in opposition and dissipates energy.
“Less vibration. More control. Same geometry.”
SOFTWARE CONFIGURED BY PHYSICS
RS Development worked with 3phos to develop a dedicated configuration tool for the TMD system. Its role is to define the correct damping setup for each bike architecture, rider profile, terrain type and performance objective.
Instead of using a fixed universal configuration, the tool allows the TMD to be tuned with a higher level of precision. It helps determine how the system should behave depending on the vibration characteristics of the bike and the conditions it is designed for.
BIKE TYPE
Road, gravel, endurance or mixed surface platforms
TERRAIN PROFILE
Smooth asphalt, rough road, cobblestones, gravel, pavé or ultra distance use.
RIDER PARAMETERS
Rider weight, position, intensity and comfort target.
USE CASE
Racing, endurance, bikepacking, fast gravel or all road riding.
“The hardware absorbs vibration. The software makes it specific.”
STRUCTURAL VIBRATION ENGINEERING
The 3phos tool is based on a physics driven approach to tuned mass dampers and particle dampers. It uses structural vibration modelling, multi mode physics, Den Hartog tuning logic and frequency domain analysis to understand how the system should be configured.
MULTI MODE PHYSICS
The system considers the dynamic behavior of the front structure, not only a single simplified vibration peak.
DEN HARTOG TUNING
The configuration logic uses established tuned mass damper principles to define optimal frequency behavior.
FREQUENCY SEPARATION
The tool distinguishes low frequency suspension movement from higher frequency structural vibration.
VALIdated approach
The 3phos material mentions comparison with lab data and a Monte Carlo design space.
DIFFERENTIATION WITHOUT REWRITING THE BIKE
For brands and frame builders, the TMD Front Axle System offers a way to add real performance and comfort while preserving existing fork geometry, stiffness targets and platform identity.
It is scalable, tunable and suitable for a wide range of rider weights, disciplines and markets.
PERFORMANCE UPGRADE
Comfort and control where riders feel it most
CLEAN INTEGRATION
No visible suspension system required
SCALABLE PLATFORM
Adaptable for gravel, endurance and road applications
FROM CONCEPT TO PRODUCT
The Tuned Mass Damper Front Axle System brings a proven engineering principle into performance cycling. It uses physics intelligently instead of adding unnecessary complexity.
The result is a compact, elegant and tunable system ready to be developed into next generation gravel and road platforms.
